Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, in Lexington, Ky.She was born July 9, 1928, in Johnstown, Pa., the daughter of the late Peter and Dora (Peretine) Lazich, Vintondale, Pa.She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce V. Butala, Greencastle, Pa.; brother, Michael Lazich, Ocala, Fla.; two sisters, Stella Mash, Vintondale, and Dorothy Kuhar, Vintondale.She is survived by her sister, Dora Pioli, Montoursville, Pa., and brother, Peter Lazich, Greencastle, Pa.Her loving family includes son, Michael J. Butala and wife, Carolann (DeFilippo), of Indianland, S.C.; daughter, Karen Bradley and husband, Marty, of West Liberty, Ky.; and son, Bruce J. Butala and wife, Loretta (Bonfield), of Broadlands, Va.; grandchildren, Michael V. (Amanda) Butala of Clarks Summit, Pa., Daniel Butala of Alexandria, Va., Diane (Michael) Bradley of Mechanicsville, Md., Brenda (Lee) Bowles of Charlotte, N.C., Lisa (Josh) Baucom of Mechanicsville, and Martin Bradley of West Liberty, Ky.; great-grandchildren, Bruce and Annalyn, son and daughter of Michael and Amanda, Michael, son of Diane and Michael, Fallon and Hudson, daughter and son of Brenda and Lee, Kaitlyn and Mackenzie, daughters of Lisa and one great-great-grandson, Vincent, son of Kaitlyn.Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately called her “baba” and “bubbie.”She was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Greencastle, and participated in the growth of the church from a mission to a parish.Eva will always be remembered as a loving and caring mother who worked very hard to provide her family with a happy atmosphere, great meals and encouragement to do their best in life.Rest well in knowing you did all of that, and may you meet again all those in your life that made you smile, sing and dance.God bless you!A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 385 S. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 26th, at 2:30 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor David Wertz will officiate. Burial will be in the Afton Township Cemetery in rural Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation at the funeral homewill be on Friday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.comJoyce was born on April 13, 1928 to Richard and Hilda (Smith) Lawrey on the family farm in rural Cherokee, County, Iowa. She attended Larrabee School and graduated from Larrabee Consolidated High School in 1946. She attended Buena Vista College in 1946-1947, receiving her teaching certificate. She taught country school in rural Everly, Iowa from 1947 until her marriage to Leonard Kastengren on October 16, 1948 in Cherokee, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Marilyn (Kastengren) Zadow, David Kastengren and Janet (Kastengren) Huffstutler. Joyce and Leonard lived in rural Aurelia, Iowa, and she was actively engaged in the farming operation with her husband Leonard. She continued to do so after her husband’s passing in 1998 until the present. Joyce was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on September 23, 1973, and she was an avid student of the Bible. She enjoyed flower gardening and vegetable gardening, and was also an avid quilter. She also enjoyed her apple orchard, cooking, painting, art and music, and found joy in teaching others.. Most of all, Joyce cherished visits with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. All who knew her were touched by her gentle, kind, and intelligent spirit.Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Hilda Lawrey; her husband, Leonard Kastengren on February 24, 1998; her brother, Virgil Lawrey; and a great-grandson, Johnathan Rosentrater.She is survived by her three children and their spouses:, David (Patricia) Kastengren of rural Aurelia, Iowa; Marilyn (Kevin) Zadow of Aurelia, Iowa; Janet (Steven) Huffstutler of Ocala, Florida; 12 grandchildren: Kurt (Kari) Rosentrater...
